Jism 2 (2012) Movie Review, Story, Plot

Jism2 Movie Review

JISM 2, an erotic thriller, is touted as the boldest film [in that segment] to hit the Hindi screen, but the question that crosses your mind is, does it boast of a captivating story as well? Do you carry the film and the characters in your heart once you exit the auditorium? Most importantly, do you reminisce about it? Does it have recall value? Or does one forget about it the moment the show concludes?

Although JISM 2 is the second installment of the 2003 hit that starred Bipasha Basu and John Abraham, there’s a huge disparity between the two films. JISM 2 is visually stunning, the aesthetics are just right, but the voyage of a woman from the lust bazaar who markets desire is far from perfect. The lackluster screenplay of JISM 2 is its biggest undoing!

The star of the show is, without doubt, Sunny Leone. People are looking forward to watching JISM 2 for Sunny, erotica and a generous dose of skin show, in that order. In fact, a wide section of moviegoers might frequent the cineplexes to watch Sunny alone, but for another segment it could be erotica. As the reels unfold, you realize that Sunny delivers as an actor. Unfortunately, the script doesn’t.

The other issue is that the story of JISM 2 unfolds at a leisurely pace, which shouldn’t be the case if it’s meant to be a thriller. Also, it gets too verbose and talk-heavy after a point, with Randeep Hooda’s character delivering idealistic lines that test your tolerance. Notwithstanding the blemishes, the fact remains, the curiosity to watch Sunny Leone will act as its savior.

A porn star, Izna [Sunny Leone], is entrusted the responsibility of luring a dreaded assassin, Kabir [Randeep Hooda]. The people behind the task are two intelligence officers, Guru [Arif Zakaria] and Ayaan [Arunoday Singh], who need to recover some vital data from Kabir. Izna has to confront her bitter-sweet past, but the problem arises when Ayaan falls in love with her. She has to make a choice!

There’s no denying that Pooja Bhatt has extracted an arresting performance from Sunny Leone. But the screenplay plays a complete spoilsport. This could’ve been a convincing take on obsession, vengeance and infidelity, but there’s hardly any movement in the story. Plus, a few questions remain unanswered [How does Sunny get into the porn trade? When does Arunoday have a change of heart and fall in love with Sunny?]. Besides, the film is stretched without much reason in its post-interval portions. Additionally, you don’t have compassion for any of the characters, as the film draws to a close.

The music of JISM 2 is soothing and soulful. The emphasis is clearly on melody here. The cinematography is top notch. The DoP captures the lush green locales of Sri Lanka magnificently.

Sunny Leone is dazzling to look at and has an incredible body, but does she deliver as an actress? To start with, Pooja has, very smartly, cast her as a seductress. Sunny’s gestures, body language, erotic scenes and sex appeal are, unquestionably, far more seasoned than most divas, who restrain a sort of hesitation when it comes to steamy scenes. She is scorching hot in JISM 2 and takes the heat percentage to an altogether different level. Sunny’s maiden attempt at acting comes across as confident and charming, but, at the same time, there is scope for improvement, especially during the emotional moments.

Despite Sunny and the hype adjoining her, Randeep enacts a pivotal character with aplomb. In fact, Randeep has lucratively carved a niche for himself, creating a space of his own with films like ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER and JANNAT 2. He pitches in another striking act in JISM 2. Arunoday tries hard, but is not convincing enough. Also, he is awfully awkward and ill at ease in sequences that require him to breakdown emotionally.

Arif Zakaria is a name you correlate with competent performances and he is effective in this one as well. Sumeet Nijhawan gets limited scope. Imran Zahid is hardly there.

On the whole, JISM 2 has Sunny Leone as its USP, but the lackluster screenplay and the sluggish pace act as deterrents. However, Sunny Leone in the driver’s seat, coupled with a generous dose of skin show and erotica, besides an attention-grabbing title, should act as a honey-trap to lure the audiences. But how one wishes this jism had soul as well!

Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum (2012) Movie Review, Story

Exclusive Review

KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM brings the sex comedy genre back into focus. Designed with teenagers and young adults in mind, this movie is up to the brim with sexual innuendoes, adult jokes and impish humor.

But be forewarned… KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM is a zany entertainer that belongs to the ‘hardcore commercial cinema’ category, as we call them in film parlance, aimed at magnetizing the masses in hordes. It’s for viewers who are relentlessly thirsting for madcap amusement. It’s not for pseudo intellectuals, neither for fuddy-duddies or hard-nosed and stubborn evaluators, who persistently dismiss and disregard movies of its ilk as lowbrow absurdity.

KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM revolves around two friends, Adi [Tusshar Kapoor] and Sid [Riteish Deshmukh]. Adi is an aspiring actor who appears in tacky ads, while Sid is a DJ, who never gets the right opportunities. The story takes a turn when they venture on an adventurous trip to Goa to retrieve something invaluable.

Like I pointed out earlier, KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM is wicked and caters to young adults. In fact, even some skeptics, who laugh aloud while watching an AMERICAN PIE, should enjoy the ludicrousness and hilarity of KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM.

Don’t look for a path-breaking story here! From what one gathers, director Sachin Yardi yearns for audiences’ laughter at any price. Yardi has kept the narrative speedy all the way through and has integrated some clever lines to keep the hilarity alive. There are sooooo many hilarious episodes in the film and several naughty jokes as well. Also, a bucketful of double entendres. I’d say, the sequences and some of the dialogue will stun you. But it’s fun nonetheless, with hilarity unlimited. In fact, it’s a movie that can ideally be referred to as a ‘de-stressing entertainer’.

Any blemishes? Though there’s hardly a dull moment in its swift screenplay, I wish to add, KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM droops faintly in the middle, but again concludes on an unpredictably sprightly high. Besides, there are some jokes that work big time, while a few only try very hard to evoke mirth.

The soundtrack is scored by numerous music composers and the tunes are energetic and utterly in sync with the spirit of the movie. ‘Dil Garden Garden Ho Gaya’, ‘Shirt Da Button’ and ‘UP Bihar Lootne’ are wonderful tracks, bringing the youthful zest to the fore. Even the track during the end titles is high on energy. Ravi Walia’s cinematography is lively, with each frame appearing vibrant. I’d like to make a special mention of the dialogue. Witty to the core!

The show belongs to the two lead actors and together they’re a riot! Both Riteish and Tusshar are known for their impeccable comic timing. Riteish is terrifically hilarious in this side-splitting act. Tusshar is equally compelling and does incredibly well. In fact, both Riteish and Tusshar act in tandem and complement each other delightfully. Neha Sharma and Sarah Jane Dias get it right. Their confidence, enthusiasm and lack of inhibitions while partaking in a naughty scene, delivering a wicked line or sporting a reveal-it-all outfit gives the film further impetus.

Anupam Kher is admirable and adjoins qualitative value to the movie. Chunkey Pandey is hilarious, especially in the introductory sequence. Howard Rosemeyer is uniformly wacky. Ditto for Razzak Khan. Kavin Dave is perfect. The pug is endearing in a significant role. Rohit Shetty and Mushtaq Shiekh make pleasant cameo appearances.

On the whole, KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM is sure to get the affirmation nod by its target audience — the youth. Despite the sexual tone, adult jokes, impish humor, the movie, at no juncture, gets offensive, distasteful or objectionable. In fact, it’s one big joyride from commencement to conclusion. This one is for the masses, for youngsters, for those who loved part one and enjoyed its crazy hilarity. KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM offers entertainment, entertainment and only entertainment in large doses!

Cocktail (2012) Movie Review-

Meera [Diana Penty] starts living with Veronica [Deepika Padukone], after she gets dumped by Kunal [Randeep Hooda]. Meera is very desi at heart and also an introvert, while Veronica is a wild-child. Though the two are poles apart, they get close within days of getting to know each other. Enter Gautam [Saif Ali Khan], who has a torrid affair with Veronica and starts living with her. It’s a no commitments relationship. Meera, however, dislikes Gautam. But the unthinkable happens: Gautam and Meera fall in love.

First things first! COCKTAIL represents a mélange of three divergent characters: Saif is wacky and outrageous, Deepika is intense and wild and Diana is calm and undemanding. Whip and fluff up the three and the title seems completely justified. Also, the three characters experience a ‘cocktail’ of emotions: Love, lust, laughter and of course, all that comes with heart-break.

Homi Adajania, who made his directorial debut with BEING CYRUS, attempts a rom-com in COCKTAIL with effortless ease, handling a number of sequences with dexterity. Come to think of it, COCKTAIL is a complex film, which reflects the complexity and intricacies of human relationships. The highpoint of the film is the three sharply defined characters, besides, of course, the styling and visuals.

But this slice-of-life film skids in the post-interval portions. In fact, if the first hour is absorbing, fascinating and pleasurable, hitting the right notes when required, the second hour is half as exciting as the first. What ails the film? Well, too many songs, an over-stretched story, the inconsistent screenplay, the beaten to death finale and the lethargic pacing.

It would be blasphemous if one were to ignore the styling of the characters in this movie [Anaita Shroff Adajania]. Graceful designs dictate the wardrobes of the lead actors in COCKTAIL, which not only seizes your attention, but also takes fashion trends frontward. The soundtrack of COCKTAIL [Pritam] strikes the right chords. ‘Tumhi Ho Bandhu’, ‘Daaru Desi’ and ‘Yaariyaan’ reflect the mood of the film brilliantly. Salim-Sulaiman’s background score is classy and effectual. Anil Mehta’s cinematography gives the film the international feel. In fact, the film has several stunning visuals. The dialogue seem straight out of real life, but are wicked at times too ['I am carrying his bun in my oven'].

After LOVE AAJ KAL and AARAKSHAN, Saif and Deepika team up for the third time and the chemistry and comfort between the actors is unmistakably obvious. Saif has that flair for rom-coms and Homi injects the Delhi flavor into his character, which makes his character all the more notable. Saif fits into his character fluently and leaves a deep-seated impression. The scene stealer is, without doubt, Deepika, who not only looks sizzling hot, but pitches in her career-best performance. She lets herself loose, surrenders to her character wholly and nails the performance. It’s an incredibly noticeable act. It wouldn’t be erroneous to state that COCKTAIL would do for Deepika what JAB WE MET did for Kareena.

Diana, who makes her acting debut, gets to portray a rather difficult character for her debut film. There’s a very disarming kind of innocence that she brings to the role and she impresses a great deal. Dimple Kapadia is in terrific form, portraying the atypical North Indian lady with gusto. Boman Irani is first-rate, especially in sequences with Dimple. Randeep Hooda’s character is under-nourished.

On the whole, COCKTAIL has a fascinating first half, charismatic performances, harmonious music and the trendy look and styling as its aces, but the second half is not as tempting or intoxicating as the first hour. It pales when compared to the attention-grabbing first hour. Yet, all said and done, this one’s primarily targeted at the Gen Next, especially those in metros, who might identify with the on-screen characters.
